  1. Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology was established at Bhuj in May 1995 as a registered society
     

  2. The objectives of GUIDE are :

    1. Focus on desert and arid ecosystems of Gujarat, with special emphasis on Kutch.

    2. Develop benchmark database for ecosystems of Kutch and thereafter undertake continuous and trend-analysis through specific research activities.

    3. Identify problem areas and evolve appropriate solutions and management strategies, with the help of applied research.

    4. Formulate and implement relevant projects that would provide models for emulation.

    5. Disseminate ecological information and communicate action plans to suit local conditions, through extension and other programmes.

    6. Provide constancy and training to NGO's, Government officials, business and other natural resources managers in the principles of ecology integrated management and sustainable
       

  3. The institute has carried out several studies, some of which are :

    1. Status Report on Desertification in Kutch and Banaskantha districts.

    2. Ecological Restoration of Mining Areas of Kadipani, Ambaji and Panandhro in the Vadodara, Banaskantha and Kutch districts.

    3. Ecological Restoration of Banni Grass land.
